CCE - Concept

Continuous and comprehensive evaluation, (CCE) refers to the practice of evaluating student’s skills and proficiency that covers all aspects of development, periodically throughout the course and maintaining a record of cumulative progress achieved.

  • Continuous –the process of evaluation of students Growth and development is continuous rather than one time event.
  • Comprehensive- evaluating all aspects of student’s growth and development (cognitive, affective and psycho-motor domains) including both scholastic and co- scholastic proficiency.

CCE

Aims of CCE

  • To make evaluation of students an integral part of teaching learning process
  • To lay emphasis on thought process and de -emphasis memorization in learning.
  • To eliminate subjectivity or subjective bias in evaluating student’s attainments.
  • To keep students continually motivated to learn throughout the academic year.
  • To encourage students to participate in co- scholastic activities, besides achieving scholastic proficiency.
  • To help the teacher take corrective measures based on feedback received from the assessments of students learning.
  • To assess student’s development and encourage to improve further.
  • To make the process of teaching and learning a learner-centred activity.
  • Thus, CCE aims to use evaluation for improvement of student’s achievement and teaching learning strategies on the basis of regular diagnosis, followed by remedial instruction.

Characteristics of CCE

  • CCE involves the process of assessing students learning continuously throughout the academic year at regular intervals.
  • It evaluates all aspects of learner’s progress (scholastic and Co scholastic).
  • The scholastic component of CCE conceptualises evaluation of all academic subjects spread over the entire span of the learning period.
  • It also includes physical education in its scope of assessment.
  • It uses a variety of tools and techniques like written test, observation, rating, scale, checklist, quiz, etc. to evaluate different aspects of learner’s achievement.
  • CCE is carried out through formative assessment and summative assessment.
  • Descriptive indicators are used to assess the achievement profile of the learners in formative assessment.
  • Summative assessment involves regular and norm- based assessment of student’s achievement in all academic subjects at the end of a term.
  • It lays emphasis on thought process and de-emphasis memorization in learning.
  • Co- scholastic evaluation is the assessment of many informal and formal developmental areas, such as life, skills, attitudes, values, Wellness, service activities and work education.

Functions of CCE

  • It helps the teacher organise effective teaching strategies.
  • It helps to assess student’s progress continuously.
  • It serves to diagnose the deficiencies in student learning and permits the teacher to ascertain the individual learner’s strength, weakness and needs.
  • It provides immediate feedback to the teacher, which helps in remedial instruction.
  • The feedback also helps the students to have realistic self assessment.
  • It can motivate to develop good study habits, to correct errors and to direct their activities towards achievement of desired goals.
  • It helps the learner to determine the area of instruction that require more focus and emphasis.
  • CCE identifies areas of aptitude and interest of students.
  • It also help teacher in identifying the required changes in attitudes and values of students.
  • It helps in making decisions for future regarding choice of subjects, courses and careers.
  • It provides information on the progress of students in scholastic and co-scholastic areas and thus helps in predicting the future success of the learner.

Merits of CCE

  • Student performance is continuously evaluated at regular intervals and feedback is provided for improvement in teaching learning process.
  • The continuous evaluation promotes in students the habit of studying regularly.
  • Teaching learning activities are well developed.
  • Student’s assignment and progress are reported periodically to their parents and their cooperation in improving the learning of their wards is secured.
  • CCE helps in identifying deficiency in student’s learning and taking immediate remedial measures for the same.
  • It is non threatening and helps in reducing learner stress by assessing periodically.

Disadvantages of CCE

  • Student’s mental stress and anxiety have increased as they have to take an increased number of assessments.
  • Evaluation procedures differ from school to school.
  • In overcrowded classes with more number of students, proper implementation of CCE is practically not possible.
  • Implementation of CCE has resulted in the increase of teacher’s workload.

Role of teachers in CCE

  • Teachers should not spend more number of days in conducting assessment tests, allowing for the decrease in quantum of time available for regular classroom teaching.
  • Findings of assessment tests regarding students attendance should be entered in proper registers then and there without any delay.
  • Teachers should be honest and fair in evaluating student’s performance.
  • Teachers should never use assessment as a tool to discipline the students.
  • Teacher should provide proper feedback to students based on the findings in the assessment report and take measures to improve student’s learning.
  • Teacher should inform the parents, now and then about the learning progress of their wards and secure their cooperation in improving students performance further.

 Kirthi's Exam Insight:

"CCE is a very common 10-mark question. To score a perfect 10/10, you must clearly define the two keywords separately in your introduction: 'Continuous' refers to the regularity of assessment (Formative), and 'Comprehensive' refers to the mental, emotional, and physical development of the child.

The Topper's Secret: In your answer, always distinguish between Scholastic (Academic subjects) and Co-scholastic (Life skills, values, and sports). Examiners look for these specific terms.

Presentation Tip: Draw a simple 'Holistic Development' diagram showing a child in the center with arrows pointing to 'Cognitive' (Head), 'Affective' (Heart), and 'Psychomotor' (Hand). Mentioning this '3H' approach (Head, Heart, Hand) proves your expertise and will surely get you those extra marks!"
